WELCOME
Ohio CARES is a non-profit organization in Ohio whose primary goal is to improve out-of-hospital cardiac arrest survival by providing communities, EMS providers, and health care systems with vital data and resources.
Ohio CARES utilizes the Cardiac Arrest Registry to Enhance Survival (CARES) national database to measure and report important cardiac arrest statistics, current treatment modalities, and survival outcome comparisons. We collaborate with communities and health care providers to implement evidence-based solutions that will measurably improve survival from cardiac arrest.
By joining CARES, members gain more than just access to information that will help them improve performance and save lives. They also contribute to one of the largest EMS/Health Care system registries in the world, and one of the few that also includes patient outcome information from hospitals. Those features enable CARES data to be used to conduct vital research that furthers our knowledge of cardiac arrest treatment and saves countless lives for years to come.
OUR MISSION IS:
MEASURING OUTCOMES
By collecting data from various sources, communities can compare themselves to local, state and national performance and discover ways to improve their emergency medical system responses to out-of-hospital cardiac arrests. Tracking performance allows communities to better understand which elements of their systems are working well and which elements need improvement.
IMPROVING PATIENT CARE
CARES offers technical assistance to help community leaders, EMS system managers, fire chiefs and hospital system administrators how to identify and prioritize opportunities to improve EMS performance.
SAVING LIVES
The ultimate goal is to increase out-of- hospital cardiac arrest survivability through improved care and prevention measures.

ACCOMPLISHING OUR GOALS BY
Activation of 911
Early activation of the 911 system and Emergency Medical Dispatcher pre-arrival instructions increase the chances of surviving the cardiac event
Rapid Medical Response
Immediate bystander cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), use of an automated external defibrillator (AED), and rapid EMS response times are critical when a heartbeat stops
EMS Protocols
Comprehensive and progressive prehospital protocols and transport guidelines increases the survival rates of cardiac patients
Hospital Resources
Critical care interventions and support from all hospital system disciplines is an integral part of survivability
